Already the third special \tcompilation released by the Czech label HORUS CyclicDaemon<\/strong>. After the \trelatively modest Chaos<\/a> and the luxurious Lust from the Underworld<\/a>, this \ttime it’s another spectacular compilation: AL<\/a>, dedicated to the 100 year \told Liber AL vel Legis, the Book of the Law<\/em>, the classic esoteric work \tby the enigmatic Aleister Crowley.<\/p>\n

25 artists were asked to contribute a song inspired by Crowley or using his \ttexts. The double cd comes in a splendid large box, with contains a fold-out \tdigipack with the two discs, a poster with the cover artwork on larger \tformat and an A5 glossy booklet, with information about the songs. Though \tthe discs you see the magickal number of 666 copies, the number of the Great \tBeast, the release is limited to 418 numbered copies.<\/p>\n

There are no Crowleyian texts included or long analyses, which you might \texpect. The booklet only contains a short, but pleasant to read introduction \tby Carl Abrahamsson about Crowley and his Book of the Law, apparently „a \tmessage from cosmic forces, declaring a new age of will, love and endless \tcreative possibilities“.<\/p>\n

It’s not surprising that the music on this compilation has a dark, ritual \tcharacter. Many bands employ a dark ambient or neo-classical sound, with \tsome folk and medieval elements. Almost all material is exclusive to this \trelease. You could encounter many of the artists involved on the previous HORUS CyclicDaemon <\/strong>compilations.<\/p>\n

On Disc 1 the collaboration between The Soil Bleeds Black and Psychonaut 75 \tas Hexentanz<\/strong> is a striking track, an overwhelming orchestral composition \twith ritual percussion and alternating male and female spoken word. A slow \tand shimmering, mysterious piece with female vocals is brought by Duparc<\/strong>, \tthe new project of Carlos Boll (The Mystery School). While Angels Watch<\/strong> contributes his typical brand of dark folk on Walpurgis Night<\/em>, a track \toriginally included on a 1988 cassette release. Genesis P. Orridge<\/strong> could not \tfail on a compilation like this, he delivers his spoken words on top of an \tinteresting musical tapestry weaven by Cotton Ferox<\/strong>. Atrium Carceri <\/strong>proves \tonce again to be one of the better dark ambient creators. The piece by Belborn<\/strong> is typical for their sound, a starightforward acoustic piece with \tclearly articulated vocals. The other, mostly neo-classical tracks, by the \tlikes of Encryption, Unto Ashes, Za Fr\u00fbmi<\/strong> and Abnocto<\/strong> are decent, \tatmopsheric compositions.<\/p>\n

Disc two has in general a darker, more ritual and experimental sound. Hadit<\/strong>, \tthe project related to Mondblut, convinces me with an electronical, haunting \tpiece. Silence & Strength<\/strong>, an unknown project for me, has a very dark and \tritual track with spoken words, strongly reminding me of Endura. The Circus \tof the Scars <\/strong>contributes a nice hypnotizing, somewhat psychedelic \tsoundscape. Ah-Cama Sotz<\/strong> really sounds dense and deep, while Chaos as \tShelter <\/strong>gets me in their spell with a long droning soundscape. Satorii <\/strong>makes \tthings more bombastic with a heavy martial composition in the way of In \tSlaughter Natives. Other ritual soundscapes, by the likes of This Morn‘ \tOmina<\/strong>, Artefactum <\/strong>and 4th Sign of the Apocalypse <\/strong>are also solid spherical \tpieces.<\/p>\n

In short, a dark and varied compilation, with a high quality of music and a \tsplendid packaging. Really worth obtaining, even if you don’t have plans to \tpractice any Crowleyian rituals…<\/p>\n
