He was assistant film editor in Christian Wagners \u201cTransatlantis\u201d, where he worked with Peter Przygodda for the first time. He was then also his assistant in Wim Wenders \u201cLisbon Story\u201d, Romuald Karmakars \u201cDer Totmacher \u201c and \u201cManila\u201d and Volker Schl\u00f6ndorffs \u201cPalmetto\u201d and \u201cDie Stille nach dem Schuss\u201d. He directed \u201cThe Dreamer&#8220; and \u201cIm Rhythmus der Zeit\u201c. In 2000 Weiss founded \u201cDie Filmmanufaktur\u201d along with Marco Kreuzpaintner, with which \u201cDer Atemk\u00fcnstler\u201d (directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner) was produced. Together with Peter Przygodda he edited Wim Wenders \u201cDont Come Knocking\u201d, which was nominated for Best Film Editing at the European Film Awards.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"386.72150000000005\">Before Schmidt founded the now legendary group CAN in 1968, he had completed a comprehensive music degree: composition, piano, conducting and musical ethnology. His composition teachers included G. Ligeti and K.H. Stockhausen.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"317.1868333333333\">Schmidt has been appearing as a pianist and conductor since 1960 and has composed music for film and theatre productions.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"332.673\">His musical creations since CAN have included the most varied of works, such as:<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"227.2031666666667\">Orchester Musik I &#8211; IV, the solo albums \u201cToy Planet\u201c, \u201cMusk At Dusk\u201c, \u201cImpossible Holidays\u201c, \u201cAnthology Soundtracks 1978 \u2013 1993\u201c (3CD Box Set) and more than 120 film scores.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"158.83816666666664\">Schmidts fantasy opera \u201cGormenghast\u201c premiered at the Wuppertal Opera House in 1998. The Times critic Rodney Milnes wrote:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"158.83816666666664\">\u201cIf Richard Strauss had written rock music, this is how it would have sounded \u2013 glorious and shamelessly sensual.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"158.83816666666664\">The work was presented again at the Weltkulturerbe V\u00f6lklinger H\u00fctte in 2004 and at the Luxembourg Grand Theatre.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"335.6631666666667\">In 2003, Schmidt received a lifetime achievement ECHO award, along with other group members Liebezeit and Czukay, for CAN.<\/div>\n<div data-canvas-width=\"6.783333333333333\">In 2005 the German Oper am Rhein commissioned him to write the music for the ballet La Fermosa (choreography by Youri Vamos, premiere in D\u00fcsseldorf on 1.3.2008).
